The Northside Youth Writing Workshop has been running for three years as part of the community centre’s after-school programming. It was originally conceived as a homework help session, but over time it evolved into something more: a space where young people from the neighborhood could explore writing, storytelling, and self-expression in a low-pressure environment.
When the centre’s program coordinator, Ms. Joelle Hartman, reached out to Propelia looking for volunteer support, the fit felt immediate. Propelia’s mission has always centered on empowering young people to find their voices and develop their ideas with rigor and confidence. Here was a room full of young people already trying to do exactly that — they just needed more hands, more time, and more one-on-one attention than a single program coordinator could provide alone.
Propelia put out a call to its student community. Within 48 hours, twelve volunteers had signed up.
